New to Salary Packaging?
What is Salary Packaging?
Salary Packaging is an Australian Taxation Office approved means of allowing employees to effectively restructure their income.
Salary Packaging is an alternative way of being paid (or remunerated) by sacrificing some gross salary in return for non-cash employer provided benefits. Typically people are paid gross salary through payroll and income tax is deducted and they are left to spend or save the rest (the net or "take home pay").
Salary Packaging works by transferring the way you pay for a service or a good from post tax to pre tax. Effectively, the marginal tax rate that you are on is the savings that can be obtained from Salary Packaging (less any other Taxes or charges).
What benefits are currently available?
Who is eligible to salary package?
Employees of Curtin University of Technology, either on a going employment contract or a fixed term contract, may participate in the Salary Packaging scheme.
What does it cost?
Salary Packaging is provided to employees on a 'no cost to the University' basis. Consequently the employees meet all the cost of administering the scheme. For a schedule of the costs click here.
Why do I need to seek Salary Packaging Advice?
It is a policy requirement that before the University will enter into a salary-packaging agreement with an employee, that the employee must have sought salary-packaging advice from a University nominated independent Salary Packaging Advisor.
The initial interview is without obligation, and should the package not proceed not at any cost to the employee.
University nominated salary packaging consultants are primarily selected on the basis of their Fringe Benefits Tax knowledge and their remuneration planning expertise, particularly on packaging in the university sector. The Consultants are not Financial Planners and will not provide advice in this area.
